Is it for you?

You are comfortable on the command line and curious about what happens between “merged” and “live”.

What you’ll learn

  1. Package an application in a container that runs the same everywhere
  2. Build a pipeline that tests every change before it can merge
  3. Deploy automatically, and roll back quickly when something breaks
  4. Describe infrastructure as code instead of clicking through consoles
  5. Add logs, metrics and alerts so problems are seen early

The stack

  • Linux
  • Docker
  • GitHub Actions
  • Infrastructure as code
  • Monitoring
  • Cloud basics

The project brief

Deployment pipeline for a growing team

A small engineering team is outgrowing manual deploys. Design and automate their pipeline: containerised builds, tests on every pull request, staged rollouts and a one-step rollback.

What it shows
That you can make a team’s releases faster and safer, and explain the trade-offs you chose.

Briefs are modelled on real startup problems for learning. The work is yours: it is not done for any company, and it is not paid.

How the track runs

  1. Plant roots. Create your profile, choose your track and see what it covers.
  2. Foundations. Work through your track’s learning material at your own speed.
  3. Project sprint. Join a pod of up to six and build a production-style project brief.
  4. Lead and reflect. Optionally lead a pod, support newer students, and review what you learned.
  5. Share your portfolio. Publish your shipped work and earn your certificate of completion.

Questions about this track

Will the DevOps track cost me money in cloud fees?
It shouldn’t. The project is designed to run on free tiers and on your own machine. Your mentor will point out anything that could incur charges before you start it.
Do I need to know programming for DevOps?
Basic scripting helps. The track assumes you can read code and use a terminal, and teaches the rest along the way.
