Accessibility statement

Branchout should work for everyone who wants to learn, whatever device or assistive technology they use.

Last reviewed: September 26, 2026

Our aim

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA across the public website and the student dashboard. We haven’t had an independent audit yet, so we don’t claim full conformance; this page says what we have done and where we know we fall short.

What we’ve done

  • Pages use meaningful headings, landmarks and lists, and every page has a “Skip to content” link.
  • Everything can be reached and used with a keyboard, with a clearly visible focus outline.
  • Text and interface colours are chosen to meet WCAG contrast requirements.
  • Pages reflow on small screens and at 200% browser zoom without sideways scrolling.
  • Animation is reduced when your device asks for reduced motion.
  • Forms have visible labels, explain errors in text, and move focus to a summary of any problems.
  • The cookie banner and menus can be operated with a keyboard and closed with Escape.

The 3D tree

The 3D tree on some pages is decoration: everything it shows is also in the page’s text, and every branch you can point at is also a normal link in a list. It is hidden from screen readers. If your device asks for reduced motion, the tree stays still; if your browser can’t show 3D or you have data saving turned on, you see a still image instead.

Known limitations

  • The student dashboard was built before this website. It now uses the site’s colours and type and has a 12px minimum text size, but it has not yet been fully reviewed against WCAG 2.2 with real accounts.
  • Third-party sign-in pages are run by Google and GitHub, and their accessibility is outside our control.
  • Project briefs and learning materials we add may not all have been checked yet.

How we test

We check pages with automated tools, with a keyboard alone, at small screen sizes, at high zoom and with reduced motion turned on. We have not yet completed testing with screen readers, and we plan to.

Report a problem

If something on Branchout is hard to use, please tell us which page, what you were trying to do and, if you like, what assistive technology you use. Use the contact form. If you need information from the site in another format, ask and we will do our best to provide it.
